'Commendation 2008'...His Excellency Mr William Paterson PSM Australian Ambassador, Bangkok, Thailand.

Clown Eckie is a master of his trade, but has in particular impressed me with his empathy and capacity to engage disabled and disadvantaged kids in Thailand, having them rocking with laughter and totally immersed in his presentations.  Although this is all about fun, it was quite moving to see him draw these children out and get them to participate.

His modest and self-deprecating manner is appealing and his range of tricks is wide and varied and accomplished with expertise. Clearly, he could relate to any audience.  Overall, a polished performer, and a lot of fun both for children and their parents.

A Lasting memory for these refugees

Clown Eckie strives to give something unique to those in need of a little happiness in their lives

The Gift of Happiness

Clown Eckie's short description of his devotion to changing frowns into smiles...

I moved to South East Asia eight years ago and have been working as a professional entertainer in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand ever since. I’ve also worked in Shanghai, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos and Burma. Since settling in Bangkok I have enjoyed great success and am now well established with long-term contracts at many five-star hotels and for the past three years I have performed weekly shows at the world famous Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok. I am also busy performing my shows at family parties and many other events.

Time for a change… For some time, I have been exploring ways to use my talents to help others, rather than concentrating only on commercial bookings.

In the past eight years, I have performed pro bono for charitable organizations throughout Thailand. Back in 2003, I was asked to perform for some of the children at a large orphanage in Bangkok...After my show, which I do mostly in mime, one of the volunteer carers told me that the children were very concerned that I could not speak. I was touched by this, but in the next breath, the volunteer told me that all the children were suffering from AIDS and many would probably not be there to see my show next year...This comment did more than simply touch my heartstrings. It made me emphatically decide to devote much more of my time to bringing a little laughter and cheer to the thousands of children in Thailand who are living in difficult circumstances and normally have little chance to enjoy such simple pleasures...I now have many similar memories which remind me how fortunate I am to be able to offer the gift of laughter to so many of these children and their carers.

Because of the help that I’ve received from some local companies and a few private individuals who are happy to make donations. I have been able to perform regularly at venues that would otherwise never get the chance to see such fun!

A Great Day of Fun at No Cost to the Needy... Most beneficiaries are in Bangkok and some rural parts of Thailand. They include: Children with HIV, orphans, children with physical or learning disabilities, children living in slums as well as small groups of street children who often enjoy one of my impromptu shows…Of course the guardians, doctors, nurses, teachers and volunteer workers always enjoy my silliness when I present the great day of fun.

Thank you for your interest in my efforts to bring more smiles to the faces of so many needy people. If you want to help me deliver much more happiness...please see 'Donations'.

Laughs Along the Border

Following a very successful show tour of Burmese refugee schools in North Thailand, during July 07 (See Tears of a Clown )…Clown Eckie has recently completed another major show tour with fellow entertainers who came from London and Scotland to help him produce a lasting memory for more needy children.

They gave performances, including shows in the Umpiem Mai refugee camp, remote Thai village schools in Tha Song Yang district, migrant schools, an orphanage and the now famous Mae Tao Clinic – a long-established and important provider of health care for the migrant and refugee populations along the border. Eckie was also pleased to return to the Safe House for Abandoned Children run by Social Action for Women in Mae Sot.

Shows for over a thousand children at the Umpiem Mai refugee camp and a Migrant School

Eckie wanted to leave the children and their carers with a lasting memory of the day that a silly old fat foreigner fell off his chair, made a complete fool of himself and made them feel happy for a while.

Gingernutt the Clown starting the show with his magical touch

Every performance started with a short show from Gingernutt the Clown (England) followed by a 30 minute ‘Buffoonery Show’ by Clown Eckie and his musical accompanist and fellow clown Foggy (Scotland - now Mae Sot).

Designated performance areas included stages, a clearing in a bamboo hut village – complete with roaming pig, and a generator for electricity. A couple of the larger shows with more than a thousand people in the audience, were given at the Umpiem refugee camp where the clowns were met with a great air of expectation.

Lots of people already gathered long before the advertised show time. Perhaps this is not so surprising with so many people waiting to be resettled to a third country – or just waiting. But the Karen elders were on hand to do an excellent job of controlling the excited children and ensuring that as many as possible could get close to, and see all of, the shows.

Watch out for the roaming pigs!

Eckie and his team handed out a large van load of donated goods such as children's clothing, school equipment, toys and computer parts which were distributed amongst various charities and community organisations. These goods and some money which helped fund the tour were donated by many of Eckie’s friends, British ladies groups and small businesses in Bangkok.

Some donated toys given to the Safe House for Abandoned Children

Some of the shows were organized by the Shanti Volunteer Association (SVA), a Japanese NGO, which provides educational and cultural support through library projects in the refugee camps along the Thai Burma border. Other shows were directed by Eckie and his team of volunteer artistes.

A good time was had by all!

All the performances were greatly enjoyed – not least by the clowns themselves, appearing as they were before such very appreciative audiences.

Another trip to the border area will take place August 2008. Eckie will be happy to come to your home or office in Bangkok to collect donations of...Clothes, toys, books, pens and paper etc. Any computer equipment – even if broken or obsolete. Money to help fund the tour.

For details of how to donate goods, please e-mail: charity@clowneckie.com
